Meet the Samsung S10, Galaxy wearables, and Galaxy Fold

Samsung just launched the Galaxy S10 line of premium smartphones. These will be available in 3 variants starting March 8. Pricing starts at PhP 39,990 (Galaxy S10e), PhP 49,990 (Galaxy S10), and PhP 55,990 (Galaxy S10+). It has been a decade since Samsung launched its first Galaxy S series of smartphones. Ten years later, Samsung is introducing the Galaxy S10, a premium smartphone in three variants, each with a unique user in mind.

The Galaxy S10 premium smartphones come with more screen, more cameras, and more choices. The S10, the midrange variant, features the all-new Dynamic AMOLED display that Samsung is known for, next-gen cameras, and performance designed to give users an outstanding mobile experience. Its supercharged, high-end version is the S10+ is the high-end version which takes display, camera, and performance to the next level. The S10e is the most affordable of the three variants for those who want premium essentials in a compact package.

The three S10 variants: (L-R): S10e, S10+, and S10

I took the Galaxy S10+ for a spin. One of my musts in a smartphone is the crisp quality of photos. I take a lot of photos and one thing I cannot sacrifice is the quality of the camera. But my head spun upon learning that the S10+ had FIVE cameras — 3 in the rear (two 12MP, one 16MP) and 2 in front (8MP and 10MP). I’ll give you the details in a while.

The first thing I did to test the camera was to go outside the hotel we were in, to a balcony, overlooking Bonifacio Global City. The sun was about to set and served as a great backdrop among the towering office buildings nearby. I wanted to take some photos before the sun completely set and wanted to see how the S10+ would capture them. Look below.

I caught the BGC skyline while the sun was still quite high

Similar view but by now, the sun had set completely

Here I am testing the front cameras (yes, two of them!). What do you think?

Let’s take a deep dive now into the details of the new, powerful, innovative features incorporated into the S10 line.

Introducing the Maximized Infinity Display: Full Screen Experience with Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner

Galaxy S10 is made with Samsung’s best screen yet, the world’s first Dynamic AMOLED display. As the first HDR10+-certified smartphone, the display delivers vivid digital content, and with dynamic tone mapping, you’ll see a wider range of color for a brilliant, realistic picture. Galaxy S10’s Dynamic AMOLED display is also VDE-certified for vibrant bright colors and the industry’s best contrast ratio on a mobile device for even deeper blacks and brighter whites.

Galaxy S10’s Dynamic AMOLED display also includes the first-ever embedded Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner that reads the 3D contours of your physical thumbprint – not a 2D image of it – for improved anti-spoofing. With the world’s first FIDO Alliance Biometric Component certification, this next generation biometrics authentication offers vault-like security to keep your device safe.

True Vision Multi-Camera

Building on Samsung’s camera leadership of Dual Pixel and Dual Aperture firsts, Galaxy S10 introduces new camera technology and advanced intelligence that makes it easy to take epic shots and videos:

  • Ultra-Wide Lens: A first for the S Series, Galaxy S10 offers an Ultra-Wide Lens with a 123-degree field of view, like the human eye, so what you see is what’s in frame. Perfect for impressive landscape shots, big panoramas and even fitting the entire extended family into the photo, the Ultra-Wide Lens ensures that you’ll always be able to capture the full scene.
  • Super Steady & High-Quality Video Recording: Galaxy S10 offers Super Steady recording with digital stabilization technology. Whether you’re dancing in the middle of an amazing concert or trying to record every detail of a bumpy bike ride, Super Steady allows you to capture the moment. Both front and rear cameras can shoot in up-to UHD quality, and in an industry first, the rear camera gives you the flexibility to record in HDR10+.
  • AI Camera: Galaxy S10 makes already smart features more accurate with a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) so you can get pro-grade shots worth sharing without having to manually select any advanced camera settings. Scene Optimizer can now recognize and more accurately process additional scenes because of the NPU. And with Shot Suggestion, Galaxy S10 offers automatic composition recommendations so you can frame your photo better than ever.

Intelligent Performance Features to Help You Get the Most Out of Your Phone

Galaxy S10 is built with premium hardware and machine-learning-based software that works hard, so you don’t have to. From brand new power sharing capabilities to AI-powered performance enhancement and Intelligent Wi-Fi, Galaxy S10 is Samsung’s most intelligent device yet, from the inside out.

  • Wireless PowerShare: Samsung introduces Wireless PowerShare on Galaxy S10, making it possible to easily charge Qi-certified devices. As an industry-first, Galaxy S10’s Wireless PowerShare will also charge compatible wearable devices. In addition, Galaxy S10 is capable of charging itself and a second device simultaneously via Wireless PowerShare, while connected to a regular charger, enabling you to leave your second charger at home while on a trip.
  • Intelligent Performance: The new AI software on the Galaxy S10 automatically optimizes battery, CPU, RAM, and even device temperature based on how you use your phone, and continues to learn and get better over time. Leveraging AI-capabilities, Galaxy S10 also learns how you use your device to launch your most frequently used apps faster.
  • Intelligent Wi-Fi: Galaxy S10 comes with Intelligent Wi-Fi that allows for an uninterrupted and safe connection by seamlessly switching between Wi-Fi and LTE, as well as alerting you of potentially risky Wi-Fi connections. Galaxy S10 also supports the new Wi-Fi 6 standard, making it possible for better Wi-Fi performance when connected to a compatible router.
  • Bixby Routines: On Galaxy S10, Bixby automates your routines and provides personalized recommendations to make your life easier. With pre-set and personalized routines, such as Driving and Before Bed routines, which are customized based on your habits, Galaxy S10 makes things simpler by automatically reducing device touches and cutting steps out of your day.

The Galaxy Fold

Galaxy Fold features the world’s first 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display, which folds into a compact device with a cover display. From its first flexible display prototype in 2011, Samsung continued to work to perfect the Galaxy Fold for commercial use. It’s like having two devices in one.

How does it work?

Samsung invented a new polymer layer and created a display around 50 percent thinner than the typical smartphone display. The new material makes Galaxy Fold flexible and tough, built to last. The Galaxy Fold opens smoothly and naturally, like a book, and closes flat and compact with a satisfying click. To achieve this, Samsung engineered a sophisticated hinge with multiple interlocking gears. This system is housed in a hidden enclosure for a seamless and elegant look.

The Galaxy Fold features a 10MP cover camera. The rear has 3 cameras: 12MP Telephoto, 12MP Wide Angle, and 16MP Ultra-Wide Angle. The front has 2 cameras: 8MP and 10MP. It runs on 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. It also runs on a 4,380 mAh battery and is built for both wired and wireless charging.

The Galaxy Fold comes in the following colors: Space Silver, Cosmos Black, Martian Green and Astro Blue.

There’s More: the Galaxy Wearable Line

Also launched to complement the Galaxy S10 line were three wearables: the Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Fit/Galaxy Fit e and Galaxy Buds for a range of lifestyles.

Its exercise, sleep, stress and health tracking features make Galaxy Watch Active a personal lifestyle coach for those seeking a healthier body and mind. It is available for PhP 11,990 and is compatible with iOS and Android.

The Galaxy Fit/Fit e with their thin and lightweight bodies, are made for all types of fitness enthusiasts, from casual runners to athletes. The Galaxy Buds are the ultimate wireless earbuds for those who want a seamlessly connected experience
on the go. Enhanced Ambient Sound allows you to hear your surroundings clearly even while the buds are in your ears, so you can remain aware of your environment at the same time as you take a phone call or listen to your favorite tunes. On a single charge, the Galaxy Buds can go up to six hours of Bluetooth streaming, and up to five hours of calls. Plus, their compact case holds a charge for up to seven hours, and gives the Galaxy Buds 1.7 hours on a 15 minute quick charge.
