10 ways Samsung reimagined the Galaxy S9 and S9+ for the social media crowd

Samsung has refocused its new devices away from hardware performance; it has now focused on SOCIAL, with a lot of its features designed precisely for today’s social media users who love to express themselves in terms of images, videos and emojis and who love to do many things from their phone, including watching videos and listening to music.

I still remember my first Samsung Galaxy S series phone – the S3. Oh how I loved that phone. It was fast for such a tiny phone. That began my love journey with Samsung; all my subsequent phones, up to a little over a year ago, were Samsung phones including the Note series. So I’m getting a bit sentimental now to find out that Samsung is going to launch the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ very soon!!!

Here are the top 10 ways the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ were reimagined.

  1. Super Slow-mo: By capturing movement at 960 frames per second, you can create epic slow-motion video. Both phones have a Motion Detection feature which detects motion in the frame and automatically starts to record. All one has to do is set up the shot. After capturing the Super Slow-mo video, users can select background music from 35 different options or add a tune from their own favorite playlist. Users can also easily create, edit and share GIF files with a simple tap in 3 playful styles of looping to watch the action over and over.
  2. Low light capture: Many smartphones are great in bright light but cannot handle low light situations to still give clear and bright images. Oftentimes, pictures taken by those cameras result in images that are dark, grainy, and hide important features. Samsung’s Dual Aperture (F1.5 – F2.4) in both these phones automatically lets in more light when it’s dark and less light when it’s too bright, taking photos that are crisp and clear any time.
  3. Augmented Reality (AR) Emojis: Just imagine yourself turned into an emoji. Now it can be done. AR Emoji uses a data-based machine learning algorithm, which analyzes a 2D image of you and maps out more than 100 facial features to create a 3D model that reflects and imitates expressions, like winks and nods, for true personalization. These real-life expressions can be shared not only in video but in a range of stickers. You can use your very own AR Emoji across several other third-party messaging platforms! I know….some people will find this feature eerily creepy so I want to check this feature out for myself.
  4. IP68 water, dust resistance, and even greater memory expansion: I’ve already seen a friend demo a Samsung Galaxy S9 phone by dunking it in a sink with soapy water and it continued to work! Both the S9 and S9+ are water- and dust-resistant and there’s more. The phones also have a glass back for wireless charging (just be careful handling it, though). Memory can now also be expanded up to 400GB.
  5. An improved Bixby: Bixby is Samsung’s very own virtual assistant, taking on the likes of Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana, and Alexa. But more than just a voice controlled assistant, Bixby has now been integrated into the cameras of the S9 and S9+ and uses AR and deep learning technologies that provide you with helpful information about your surroundings. Just point the camera and it generates information on top of the image on the screen. You could point, let’s say, to a sign in a foreign language, and Bixby will provide a translation (Note: At the moment, it recognizes Mandarin Chinese and Korean, aside from English).
  6. Dolby Atmos sound: Wow, and I thought this technology was only for cinemas! Both phones support Dolby Atmos. I can just imagine how music would sound if you project this through a bluetooth speaker!
  7. Infinity Display: Infinity Display first debuted with the Galaxy S8. It features bold and bright Super AMOLED Infinity Display with no bezels. Because of its adaptive contrast enhancement, you can clearly see what is on the screen even in direct daylight.
  8. SmartThings app: Made for the Internet of Things (IoT) lifestyle of one who wants a connected home, the SmartThings app is part of the S9 and S9+ and will allow connections to Samsung and non-Samsung devices.
  9. Knox 3.1: Talking about defense-grade security platform, the Knox 3.1 is IT. Each of the phones comes with 3 different biometric authentication options a user can choose from: iris, fingerprint, and facial recognition. Intelligent Scan uses the combined technology of iris and facial recognition to unlock the phone. Dedicated Fingerprint allows users the option to choose a different fingerprint, other than the one used to unlock the phone, to access the Secure Folder.
  10. The DeX Pad: The S9 and S9+ can use this new docking system to connect to a larger monitor, keyboard and mouse for enhanced document editing and even full-screen gaming. Both phones can be transformed into a Touch Keyboard and Touch Pad using the DeX Pad.
