Using Google Photos? You have just a few more weeks to upload unlimited photos and videos
Are you using Google Photos to store your photos? You only have till May 31, 2021 to upload unlimited “high quality” photos and videos before that goes away. By June 1, Google will impose a 15GB cap on photos and videos. Plus, the content on your Gmail and Google accounts count towards the 15GB cap (oh nooooo!).
Google Photos has been a go-to for many bloggers who enjoyed its unlimited storage feature, more so after several other photo hosting platforms like Flickr began charging for storage beyond a certain free capacity.
Unfortunately, everything changes by June 1. Here’s what will happen.
Photos/videos uploaded before June 1 – These will NOT count towards your 15GB limit. Note, however, that for the photos not to count towards the 15GB limit, your settings for photos needs to be set only to “high quality” (all photos are compressed down to a maximum of 16MB – which isn’t bad if you just need to upload to blogs or social media platforms). If your Google Photos setting is at “original quality”, the photos will count towards the 15GB limit.
Photos/videos uploaded June 1 onwards – These will form part of your 15GB storage capacity, which counts your Gmail and Google Drive accounts’ storage. If you already have a lot of content on these two accounts, that can be an issue. Maybe it is time to start decluttering your Gmail of old email and purging your Google Drive documents as well. Of course, you can always buy extra storage. An extra 100GB will go for PhP 89/month, which is quite affordable.
But since we still have a few weeks to go, why not take advantage of the unlimited storage? Go now and upload those precious photos from your camera and external drive.
